Exhibition catalogue published for ROCI: Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange, Neue Berliner Galerie im Alten Museum, Berlin, 10 March–1 April 1990. Universal Limited Art Editions. ISBN 0-910435-08-1. Texts in German by Donald J. Saff, Heiner Müller and Robert Hughes, with a statement by RAUSCHENBERG.

ROCI was RAUSCHENBERG’s self-funded programme of exhibitions and cultural exchange, developed between 1984 and 1991 through travel and production across ten countries. The Berlin exhibition was initially abandoned after East German authorities resisted his proposal for simultaneous exhibitions on both sides of the city. Following the opening of the Berlin Wall in November 1989, the project was reinstated and opened at the Altes Museum the following March.

The catalogue consequently records more than one exhibition. It carries a project interrupted by the state and returned to circulation through political change. RAUSCHENBERG’s photographs, assemblages and works made in response to different locations are gathered into a single portable survey, while the turtle cover — the project’s travelling emblem — turns the acronym into an image of slow, persistent movement across borders.
