Michael Steiner / Larry Poons, Skulpturen und Gemälde aus New York. Kunst- und Museumsverein Wuppertal, 1978. Exhibition: 15 September–28 October 1978. Staple-bound exhibition catalogue; 16 pages, 21 × 29 cm; colour and black-and-white offset printing; German text.

A slight exhibition catalogue bringing together Michael Steiner’s sculpture and Larry Poons’s painting under the deliberately geographical proposition of art “from New York.”

The pairing is better than it first appears. Steiner’s low, constructed steel forms occupy and interrupt physical space; Poons’s heavily worked paintings turn the surface into accumulated material. By the late 1970s, both had moved beyond the cleaner visual languages associated with their earlier work toward something slower, denser and increasingly dependent on process.

The catalogue reproduces the two practices almost as opposing states of matter: Poons vertical, fluid and sedimented; Steiner horizontal, constructed and weight-bearing. Painting and sculpture are separated by medium but connected through accumulation, revision and resistance to the single decisive gesture.

The title provides another useful layer. Sculptures and Paintings from New York turns a city into an attribution. Two individual practices arrive in Wuppertal packaged as evidence of an elsewhere — “New York” functioning simultaneously as location, cultural category and institutional shorthand. The publication therefore records more than two artists. It records how contemporary American art was exported, translated and reorganised for a European audience: artist → medium → city → exhibition.

The cover makes that construction literal, placing Steiner’s angular sculpture against a reproduced Poons surface and compressing sculpture, painting and exhibition architecture into a single printed image.

Condition: Good. General age toning and handling wear to wrappers, light edge and corner wear, some surface marking and a small crease to the lower edge. Faint period pencil notation to upper rear wrapper. Internally clean overall with expected age-related wear.
