YVES KLEIN — Exhibition Catalogue, Galerie Karl Flinker, Paris, 1973

Published eleven years after Klein’s death, this compact catalogue records an early posthumous reassessment of a practice developed during an exceptionally concentrated career between 1954 and 1962. Issued for the exhibition held at Galerie Karl Flinker, 25 rue de Tournon, Paris, 14 February to 24 March 1973, opening 13 February.

Through monochromes, bodily imprints, fire, performance and the immaterial, Klein shifted painting away from the production of images and towards colour, action and event. The publication moves between monochrome surfaces, sprayed silhouettes and the Anthropometries: works made through the direct imprint of painted bodies, which Klein described as “living brushes.” The catalogue’s blue reproductions do not simply illustrate the work; colour passes through the publication as its organising material.

This example retains the original illustrated wrappers. The rear is printed with a large facsimile of Klein’s signature, incorporated into the design rather than added by hand. The artist’s name appears as both attribution and image.

Small debossed impression to the front wrapper, with light rubbing, handling wear, surface marks and minor edge and corner softening. Internally complete and generally clean.
