Sunny Side Up was David Zwirner’s first London exhibition devoted to Josef Albers. Drawn from five decades of work, it assembled paintings and colour studies in which yellow moved from mustard and saffron to maize and golden tones. The exhibition extended from the early Variant/Adobe works, begun in 1947, through the serial structure of Homage to the Square, which Albers pursued from 1950 until his death in 1976.

The invitation carries Homage to the Square from 1971 across its entire face. The original painting measures 48 × 48 inches; here, its three nested fields are reduced to a portable square. Title, date, medium, copyright, exhibition dates and gallery address are transferred to the reverse, leaving the front without explanatory text.

Produced one year after David Zwirner began representing the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, the card accompanied the first of the gallery’s London presentations of Albers.
