Postcard, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Man from Naples, 1982. Published by The Royal Academy, London, in collaboration with te Neues Verlag, Germany, and te Neues Publishing Company, New York, 1993. Offset-printed colour on card stock, c. 10.8 × 15.2 cm. Copyright © 1993 Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat. ISBN 3-8238-7941-3. Printed in Germany. Photo: D. James Dee. Collection: Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Zürich.

Man from Naples belongs to Basquiat’s highly charged early 1980s period, when text, image, money symbols, food references, and critique of the art market were compressed into dense painted surfaces. The work is tied to Basquiat’s 1982 trip to Italy and his criticism of an Italian dealer, with the language of pork, trade, and money running through the painting.

Within The New Rare register, this is a small circulation object: Royal Academy / te Neues publishing, Estate-authorised reproduction, barcode, caption, institutional credit, and image. Not an artwork edition, but a period printed support carrying Basquiat through the museum-shop and postcard system.

Condition: Good vintage condition. Light surface marks and minor handling wear visible to verso, consistent with age and storage. Ships flat in protective archival packaging; UK and international shipping available.
