Issued to coincide with what would have been Jack Smith’s 83rd birthday (14 November), the programme presented two series: restored works by Jack Smith, and a selection of films personally admired by Smith, curated from a 1971 letter to filmmaker and writer Peter Gidal. Smith’s selections included Alexander Korda’s The Private Life of Don Juan, Arthur Lubin’s White Savage, Robert Bresson’s Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne, Luchino Visconti’s Il Gattopardo, Ludwig Berger’s Thief of Bagdad, Jean Vigo’s Zéro de conduite, and Ron Rice’s The Flower Thief, alongside screenings of Smith’s own Flaming Creatures, Chumlum, and Normal Love. Special guests included Jerry Tartaglia, Brian Baiserman, Jeannie Reymes, Cocoñut, Fleur Buckley, Peter Gidal, and others.

Rather than functioning solely as an exhibition handout, the card maps Smith’s own cinematic influences, revealing the network of references surrounding one of the most influential figures in underground American cinema. It records not only a retrospective but an act of selection, presenting Smith through the films he chose to champion.

As surviving printed material from a significant institutional reappraisal of his legacy, it remains an increasingly desirable piece of ephemera for collectors of avant-garde film, performance, and post-war counterculture.
