WALTER DE MARIA — Walter De Maria, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt am Main, 1991

Published during the opening year of Frankfurt’s Museum für Moderne Kunst, this compact institutional monograph places Walter De Maria’s sculpture, installation and land works within the museum’s newly formed collection. The MMK opened in June 1991, with major American Pop and Minimal works acquired from the former Karl Ströher collection forming its foundation. Text by Franz Meyer.

De Maria worked across Minimalism, Conceptual art, Land art and installation, using repetition, geometry and numerical sequence to shift attention from the isolated object towards space, duration and physical experience. The publication reproduces works including the serial steel installation 4-6-8 Series and the desert intervention Las Vegas Piece, moving between the controlled museum interior and lines imposed across open land. The MMK records 4-6-8 Series as a work of 1966/1991.

The restrained design follows the work: dark green wrappers, widely spaced images and large areas of unprinted paper. Sculpture is presented not as isolated illustration but through its placement within a room, landscape or existing collection.

General rubbing, scratches and handling wear to the dark green wrappers, with minor edge and corner wear. Previous owner’s pencil inscription and date to the title page; not signed by the artist. Internally complete and generally clean.
