Cindy Sherman, Kunst heute: Gespräche mit zeitgenössischen Künstlern, Nr. 14. Kiepenheuer & Witsch, Cologne, 1995. Softcover; 78 pages, 15.5 × 23 cm; German text; black-and-white and colour reproductions throughout.

A compact monographic publication built around an extended conversation between Cindy Sherman and critic Wilfried Dickhoff, conducted in New York in 1994. The interview is accompanied by reproductions spanning Sherman’s practice from the early 1980s through the Fashion and later grotesque and theatrical works of the 1990s.

Published at a particularly interesting point in Sherman’s career, after the Untitled Film Stills had established her central place within the Pictures Generation but as her work was moving increasingly toward prosthetics, masks, artificial bodies and deliberately abject forms of representation. The book catches Sherman discussing that transition from constructed identity toward images in which disguise begins to overwhelm the person performing it.

The publication itself is unusually strong as an object. Sherman’s image occupies the cover like a fashion magazine or mass-market monograph, while the interior moves between interview, biography and photographic sequence. A Comme des Garçons advertisement appears inside, further collapsing the distance between fashion image, editorial photography and Sherman’s own manipulation of those visual codes.

Rather than simply documenting the work, Kunst heute places Sherman back inside the image economy she spent her career disassembling: cover girl, interview subject, reproduced artwork and published persona at once.

Condition: Good. Light general handling and shelf wear, minor age toning and marks consistent with use. Blue “Mängelexemplar” stamp to interior rear page; internally sound.
