Tony Cokes

Tony Cokes (born 1956) is an American video and conceptual artist whose practice since the late 1980s has examined the politics of representation, popular culture, race, music and media through text-based video works that combine found footage, commercial imagery and written commentary. His works frequently take the form of scrolling or flickering text set against coloured fields and accompanied by pop and electronic music, creating a form of critical montage that implicates the viewer in the media systems under analysis. Cokes was a Helena Rubinstein Fellow in the Whitney Independent Study Program and contributed to The Power of the City / The City of Power (ISP Papers No. 1, 1992). His work has been exhibited at major international institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Documenta 14 (2017).
