Collection: Tony Carter

Tony Carter (born 1941) is a British sculptor who studied under Richard Hamilton at Newcastle University, where Hamilton's engagement with Duchamp and the object became a formative influence. Carter's practice centres on the transformation of familiar objects — domestic utensils, tools and instruments — through precise modification, resurfacing and titling, producing works that retain enough of the original to make recognition part of the difficulty. His objects were included in British Sculpture in the Twentieth Century at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1981, curated by Nicholas Serota and Sandy Nairne, and his work was the subject of a mini-retrospective at the Serpentine Gallery, London, and Musée de Toulon in 1983.
