Collection: Suzan Frecon

Suzan Frecon (born 1941, United States) is an American painter whose practice is centred on abstract forms, earth pigments and an acute sensitivity to natural light. Working primarily in oil on linen, her paintings are characterised by reductive curved and arched forms in deep reds, ochres and blacks, often produced in multipart configurations and informed by sustained study of historical painting, Islamic architecture and manuscript illumination. Frecon lived and worked in a raw loft on Thomas Street, New York, from 1974, where the quality of natural light became fundamental to her practice. She was included in the Whitney Biennial in 2000 and 2010, and the Menil Collection, Houston, presented a major survey of her work in 2008. Her paintings are held in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, MoMA, the Whitney Museum and the Menil Collection. David Zwirner has represented her since 2008.
