Collection: Stephen Mueller

Stephen Mueller (1947–2011) was an American abstract painter whose canvases drew on Eastern philosophy, tantric art, colour field painting and psychedelic visual culture to produce works of sustained chromatic and spatial complexity. Associated with a generation of painters who revisited spirituality and ornament as serious pictorial concerns, his work was exhibited at the Lennon, Weinberg Gallery, New York, and gained renewed critical attention in the 2000s alongside broader interest in pattern and decoration in painting. Mueller’s work is held in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Brooklyn Museum.
