Collection: Stanley Brouwn

Stanley Brouwn (1935–2017) was a Surinamese-born, Amsterdam-based conceptual artist whose practice, beginning in the early 1960s, explored measurement, movement and distance as primary materials. Associated with Fluxus in its early years, Brouwn developed a highly consistent and austere body of work in which human steps, paces and standardised units of length become the subject of minimal printed and sculptural propositions. His this way brou wn works (1960–1964), in which passers-by were asked to draw a route and their sketches were stamped with his name, are among the earliest works to incorporate the participation of anonymous members of the public as a formal element. Brouwn exhibited at Documenta 5 (1972) and Documenta 6 (1977) and maintained strict control over the documentation and reproduction of his work throughout his life.
