Collection: Roberto Matta

Roberto Matta (1911–2002) was a Chilean-born painter who joined the Paris Surrealist group in 1937 after an introduction by André Breton. His large-scale, cosmological paintings — which he called inscapes — combined biomorphic forms with spatial ambiguity and a sense of psychological and cosmic violence. He was a major influence on the Abstract Expressionists during his years in New York in the 1940s.
