Collection: Rei Kawakubo

Rei Kawakubo (born 1942, Tokyo) is a Japanese designer and the founder of Comme des Garçons, established in Tokyo in 1969 and presented in Paris from 1981. Her work has consistently challenged the conventions of Western fashion through asymmetry, deconstruction, unfinished surfaces and the displacement of garment from body. Associated with a generation of Japanese designers who transformed the Paris collections in the early 1980s, Kawakubo's practice has extended into retail architecture, fragrance and publishing. A major retrospective, Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in 2017.
