Monica Bonvicini (b. 1965, Venice) is an Italian-German artist whose installations, sculptures and texts examine architecture as an instrument of power, gender and institutional control. Emerging from CalArts in the early 1990s, her practice engages directly with the built environment as a site of exclusion and coercion, working with construction materials, signage and spatial intervention to expose the ideological structures embedded in apparently neutral space. She was awarded the Golden Lion at the 1999 Venice Biennale and participated in Documenta 11 in 2002.
