Collection: Michel Seuphor

Michel Seuphor (1901–1999) was a Belgian-born French artist, writer and critic whose practice spanned drawing, painting and typography, and whose critical and historical writing was foundational to the understanding of abstract art in the twentieth century. A close associate of Piet Mondrian in Paris in the late 1920s, he co-founded the Cercle et Carré group in 1929, one of the first international organisations dedicated to abstract art, and later wrote the first major monograph on Mondrian as well as a comprehensive dictionary of abstract painting. His own artistic practice centred on drawing and works on paper, characterised by geometric precision and typographic sensibility. Seuphor’s work is held in significant public collections internationally. He was included in Surprise, Surprise at Galerie Jean Greset, Besançon, in 2013.
