Collection: Matthew Collings
Matthew Collings (born 1955, London) is a British artist, writer and broadcaster whose practice crosses painting, criticism and television, and whose writing has shaped public understanding of contemporary British art since the 1990s. He studied at Goldsmiths College, London, and was among the critics and artists closely engaged with the YBA generation as both participant and commentator, contributing work to early group exhibitions including Instructions at Gio’ Marconi, Milan, in 1992. He is best known as the writer and presenter of the BBC television series This Is Modern Art (1999) and Art Safari (2001), and as the author of Blimey! (1997) and This Is Modern Art (1999), works that brought a deliberately demotic and self-questioning tone to the mainstream discussion of contemporary art. As a painter, his work has been shown in London and internationally. He has written extensively for Modern Painters, frieze and other publications.
