Matt Mullican (born 1951) is an American conceptual artist whose practice since the mid-1970s has centred on an elaborate personal cosmology organised around five categories — the framed world, the world unframed, the world of signs, the world defined and the elemental world — which structure a systematic investigation of meaning, representation and the organisation of knowledge. Mullican works across performance, drawing, banners, prints, rubbings, video and installation, frequently incorporating hypnosis as a mode of production in which his alter ego “a student” produces works in a trance state. He studied under John Baldessari at CalArts and has exhibited extensively at major international institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and Documenta 7 (1982).
