Collection: John Baldessari

John Baldessari (1931–2020) was an American conceptual artist whose work combined photography, film, text and appropriated imagery to interrogate the conventions of art-making, representation and meaning. Based in Los Angeles, he was a central figure in West Coast Conceptualism from the late 1960s and a highly influential teacher at CalArts. His practice consistently exposed the arbitrary relationship between image and language, and he was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale in 2009.
