Collection: Jeff Mermelstein

Jeff Mermelstein (born 1957) is an American street photographer based in New York whose close-range, flash-lit images capture the intensity and absurdity of urban public life. Working primarily in New York City, his photographs use wide-angle lenses and direct flash to produce images of startling physical immediacy. His books include Sidewalk (1999), published by Powerhouse Books, and his work has been exhibited at the International Center of Photography, New York, and collected by major institutions. Mermelstein’s photo-essay in Bald Ego no. 2 (2002) documents women playing mah jongg in a series of close-range colour photographs.
