Collection: Janette Beckman

Photobooks and publications by Janette Beckman, the British documentary photographer whose work spans British subculture of the late 1970s and early 1980s — punks, mods, skinheads — through to the emerging New York hip-hop scene and community portraiture in East Los Angeles. Beckman’s practice is grounded in direct communication with her subjects, producing portraits in which individuals determine their own presentation. Her archive includes work made for the British music press, independent publications and long-form documentary projects that remained unpublished for decades before finding their form as photobooks.
