James Salter (1925–2015) was an American novelist and short story writer whose fiction is distinguished by its precise, luminous prose style and its sustained attention to experience, desire and loss. His novels include A Sport and a Pastime (1967), Light Years (1975) and All That Is (2013). Salter also wrote screenplays, including Downhill Racer (1969) and Three (1969). Though never commercially prominent during most of his career, his work was highly regarded among writers and critics and was published in the United States by North Point Press and later by Counterpoint. He received the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction in 2000 for Burning the Days.
