Herbert Spencer (1924–2002) was a British graphic designer, typographer and writer, best known as the founder and editor of Typographica (1949–1967), the influential journal of typography and visual communication that helped introduce Continental modernist graphic design to British audiences. A significant figure in postwar British design, Spencer taught at the Royal College of Art and was elected a Royal Designer for Industry. His book designs and exhibition catalogues applied rigorous typographic intelligence to institutional publishing, including his design of the Bill Brandt retrospective catalogue for the Arts Council of Great Britain and Hayward Gallery, 1970.
