Collection: Eikoh Hosoe

Eikoh Hosoe (1933–2023) was a Japanese photographer and filmmaker whose psychologically charged, often surrealist imagery placed him at the centre of post-war Japanese avant-garde culture. His sustained collaborations with writer Yukio Mishima (Killed by Roses, 1963) and butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata (Kamaitachi, 1969) produced some of the most formally radical photobooks of the twentieth century. He represented Japan at the Venice Biennale and his work entered major museum collections internationally, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
