Collection: Donald Evans

Donald Evans (1945–1977) was an American artist who spent his short career creating an imaginary philatelic world: thousands of meticulously hand-painted postage stamps from invented countries, each with its own geography, currency, flora, fauna and postal history. Working in watercolour on small sheets of paper, he produced a body of work that sits between conceptual art, outsider practice and the intimate tradition of the artist’s book.

The objects gathered here are printed ephemera relating to Evans’s exhibition history and the posthumous circulation of his work: catalogues, invitation cards and printed matter issued for presentations of his stamps and drawings. Each piece records a specific institutional moment and the printed form through which his practice entered public circulation.
