Collection: Craig Kauffman

Craig Kauffman (1932–2010) was an American artist whose work from the late 1950s onwards was central to the development of what became known as Finish Fetish and Light and Space in Southern California. Working initially in painting before moving to vacuum-formed acrylic reliefs, Kauffman developed a practice defined by translucent colour, reflective surfaces and the precise manipulation of industrial materials. His wall-mounted acrylic works of the mid-1960s — oval and rectangular forms in candy colours that seem to glow from within — were among the most distinctive objects produced in Los Angeles during the period. He was associated with the Ferus Gallery network and was included in 5 at Pace at Pace Gallery, New York, in 1965, one of the earliest significant presentations of the Los Angeles tendency to a New York audience.
