Cildo Meireles (b. 1948, Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian Conceptual artist whose work engages the political and economic structures of everyday life. Working from the late 1960s onwards, he developed a practice that used familiar objects — banknotes, bottles, maps — as vehicles for critique, inserting subversive content into existing systems of circulation. His Zero Dollar, Zero Cruzeiro and Insertions into Ideological Circuits series are among the defining works of Latin American Conceptualism. His work is held by MoMA, Tate and major international collections.
