Collection: Christo and Jeanne-Claude
Christo (Christo Vladimirov Javacheff, 1935–2020) and Jeanne-Claude (Jeanne-Claude Denat de Guillebon, 1935–2009) were Bulgarian-American and French artists whose large-scale environmental works transformed buildings, landscapes and public spaces through wrapping, draping and temporary installation. Working collaboratively from the late 1950s, they realised projects including Wrapped Kunsthalle Bern (1968), Valley Curtain (1972), Running Fence (1976), The Pont Neuf Wrapped (1985) and The Gates in Central Park (2005). Their practice was closely associated with Harald Szeemann’s Kunsthalle Bern programme and with the broader emergence of Land Art and Conceptual Art in the late 1960s.
