Charline von Heyl

Charline von Heyl (born 1960) is a German-born painter based in New York whose large-scale canvases resist coherent stylistic categorisation, moving between figuration, abstraction, graphic sign and decorative pattern in ways that refuse resolution into a single mode. Associated with a generation of painters who emerged in the 1990s from the Cologne and Düsseldorf scenes before relocating to New York, her work has been shown at the Kunsthalle Zürich, the Museo Tamayo, Mexico City, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. Von Heyl was included in the 2004 and 2008 Whitney Biennials and is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
