Collection: Charles Gaines

Charles Gaines (born 1944) is an American artist whose practice is built on rule-based systems, numerical sequences and predetermined procedures that generate images without relying on artistic intuition or expression. Working across photography, drawing, printmaking and installation, Gaines maps natural forms — trees, faces, musical scores — onto grids and coordinates, producing works in which nature and information are held in productive tension.

Gaines began developing his systems-based approach in the early 1970s, and his Numbers and Trees series, begun in 1986, became one of the defining structures of his practice: tree silhouettes translated into colour, numbers and layered Plexiglas. His work sits at the intersection of Conceptual Art, Minimalism and a sustained inquiry into subjectivity, identity and the supposedly neutral logic of systems.
