Collection: Cecily Brown

Cecily Brown (born 1969) is a British painter based in New York whose large-scale canvases fuse Abstract Expressionist gesture with figurative imagery drawn from art history, pornography and popular culture. Working in a painterly tradition that acknowledges de Kooning, Rubens and Francis Bacon, her densely worked surfaces oscillate between abstraction and figuration, making figures emerge and dissolve within fields of gestural paint. Brown moved to New York in 1994 and was included in the 1997 exhibition “Sensation” at the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Her work has been shown at the Gagosian Gallery and she was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial. Major survey exhibitions have been held at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C., and the Museum Ludwig, Cologne.
