Bob & Roberta Smith (b. Patrick Brill, 1963, London) is a British artist whose paintings, sculptures, prints and public interventions use hand-lettered text to engage with art education, cultural policy, music and political life, often adopting a deliberately amateur visual language as a form of democratic address. Working under a collective-sounding pseudonym since the early 1990s, his practice situates itself within DIY and post-punk cultural traditions while engaging directly with institutional and governmental structures. He has exhibited widely in the United Kingdom and internationally, and stood as a candidate in the 2015 UK general election on a platform of arts education.
