Terry Winters

Terry Winters (born 1949, Brooklyn) studied at Pratt Institute and emerged in the early 1980s as one of the more distinctive painters of his generation. His work draws on natural systems — seeds, cells, spores, geological formations, neural networks — translating biological and mathematical structures into densely worked surfaces that resist easy classification. Painting, drawing and printmaking have run in parallel throughout his career, each informing the others.

His collaboration with Aldo Crommelynck in Paris in 1990–91 produced Field Notes, a portfolio of 25 etchings that entered the collections of the Met, Tate, New York Public Library and Detroit Institute of Arts. His 1991 mid-career retrospective at MOCA Los Angeles travelled to the Whitney in 1992. He has been represented by Matthew Marks Gallery and his work is held in major public collections internationally.

The printed matter gathered here documents a practice in which the catalogue, the portfolio and the artist’s book have consistently been treated as serious objects in their own right.
