TERRY WINTERS — Field Notes, Pace Prints, New York, 1992

Catalogue published by Pace Prints, New York, 1992, to accompany Field Notes, a portfolio of 25 etchings made in collaboration with master printer Aldo Crommelynck. The plates were produced in Paris in 1990–91 — Winters and Crommelynck’s second collaboration — using the full intaglio range: etching, aquatint, open-bite, spitbite and sugarlift. Seeds, cells, shells and anatomical diagrams loosen progressively into abstraction, as if natural history had developed a nervous system.

The catalogue appeared in the same year as Winters’s mid-career retrospective, which had opened at MOCA Los Angeles in 1991 and travelled to the Whitney in 1992. Staple-bound softcover, 26 pages with 25 numbered plates, 15 × 20.5 cm. Textured charcoal wrappers printed in silver. Black-and-white illustrations throughout, moving from faint clinical lines to Crommelynck’s deep mineral blacks.

The complete Field Notes portfolio subsequently entered the collections of the Met, Tate, New York Public Library and Detroit Institute of Arts. This is the catalogue — the beautifully reduced record of the moment Winters’s private morphology met museum scale.

Condition: Very good vintage condition, with gentle page toning and minimal edge wear.
