Collection: Richard Stankiewicz

Richard Stankiewicz (1922–1983) was an American sculptor whose welded assemblages of industrial scrap, boiler parts, and machine fragments made him a pioneering figure in junk sculpture during the 1950s. Studying in New York and Paris under Fernand Léger and Ossip Zadkine, he developed a witty, formally inventive approach to found metal that combined Abstract Expressionist energy with a deadpan humour. His work was exhibited at the Hansa Gallery and later the Stable Gallery, New York, and entered the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
