Collection: Red Grooms

Red Grooms (born 1937) is an American artist known for his exuberant, cartoonish environments and multifigure constructions that combine painting, sculpture, and theatre in densely populated scenes of urban life. Emerging from the Happenings milieu of late-1950s New York, he developed a distinctive figurative style that satirised and celebrated American popular culture with wit and formal invention. His large-scale installation Ruckus Manhattan (1975–76) became a landmark of environmental art, and his work is held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
