Collection: Maria Beatty

Maria Beatty (born 1961) is a Venezuelan-American filmmaker and performance artist whose short films and videos, produced from the late 1980s onward, combine fetish imagery, surrealist aesthetics, and queer female desire in works of formal precision and psychological intensity. Working in New York, she developed a distinctive black-and-white visual language drawing on silent cinema, burlesque, and body art traditions. Her films have been screened internationally at festivals and institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and she is associated with the queer underground film culture of 1990s New York.
