Lee Bontecou

Lee Bontecou (1931–2022) was an American sculptor whose welded steel and canvas reliefs of the late 1950s and 1960s—featuring dark, void-like apertures—established her as a singular presence in postwar American art, resisting easy classification within Minimalism, assemblage, or abstraction. Her work was exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery, New York, from 1960, and entered major collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. A comprehensive retrospective was organised by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, in 2003.
