Collection: La Monte Young / Marian Zazeela
La Monte Young (born 1935, Bern, Idaho) is an American composer and musician widely regarded as a founding figure of minimalism, drone music, and Fluxus-adjacent experimental practice. His Composition 1960 series — a set of text-based instruction pieces produced between 1960 and 1961 — established him as a central figure in the downtown New York experimental milieu surrounding John Cage, Richard Maxfield, and the loft concert scene. Young’s work has been foundational to subsequent developments in minimalist composition, sound art, and conceptual music.
Marian Zazeela (born 1940, New York) is an American visual artist and light sculptor who has collaborated with Young since the early 1960s. Her graphic and calligraphic work, light environments, and visual realizations have been integral to Young’s performances and installations, including the long-running Dream House environments. Her graphic work from the early 1960s — including abstract image fields produced in connection with experimental performances — sits at the intersection of visual art, score, and performance document.
This collection brings together printed matter and ephemera connected to Young and Zazeela’s practice and performances.
