Herbert Marcuse (1898–1979) was a German-American philosopher and critical theorist associated with the Frankfurt School whose synthesis of Marxism, Freudian psychoanalysis, and Hegelian dialectics made him a central intellectual figure of the New Left and the 1960s counterculture. His works Eros and Civilization (1955) and One-Dimensional Man (1964) argued for the liberatory potential of art, desire, and non-repressive reason against the administered conformity of advanced capitalist society. He taught at Brandeis University and the University of California, San Diego, and his ideas directly influenced student movements in the United States, France, and Germany.
