Collection: Gerd Winner

Gerd Winner (born 1936, Brunswick) studied in Berlin and London before settling in England, where he developed a practice centred on the photographic screenprint. Working through the 1960s and 1970s, he translated the surfaces of urban infrastructure — lorries, docks, road markings, industrial machinery, municipal signage — into large-scale prints of considerable formal precision. His work belongs to a European tradition of photomechanical printmaking that ran parallel to, and sometimes intersected with, British Pop.

Winner exhibited widely in Germany and the UK, and his prints entered significant public and private collections on both sides of the North Sea. His collaboration with Joe Tilson at Haus am Waldsee in 1970 remains one of the more instructive pairings of the period: two artists using the same medium to very different ends.

The printed matter gathered here documents a practice that has received less sustained critical attention than it warrants.
