Collection: Braco Dimitrijević

Braco Dimitrijević (born 1948) is a Bosnian-born artist whose work since the late 1960s has examined the arbitrary nature of historical fame, public memory and the mechanisms by which individuals are elevated or forgotten. His Tractatus Post Historicus series placed large-scale photographic portraits of anonymous passers-by on the facades of public buildings, museums and billboards — inserting ordinary people into the visual language normally reserved for political leaders, celebrities and historical figures. Dimitrijević also created installations combining everyday objects with Old Master paintings and natural materials, proposing alternative systems of value and significance. His work circulated widely in international conceptual and post-conceptual contexts from the early 1970s onwards.
