Collection: Allan Kaprow

Allan Kaprow (1927–2006) was an American artist who coined the term “happening” and developed it into a sustained practice that dissolved the boundaries between art, everyday life, and audience participation from the late 1950s onward. A student of John Cage and Hans Hofmann, he moved from painting and assemblage toward scripted but open-ended events that took place in galleries, streets, and domestic spaces. His theoretical writings, collected in Assemblage, Environments and Happenings (1966), were foundational for performance art and Fluxus.
