Original Phillips de Pury & Company softcover auction catalogue for a Contemporary Art sale held in New York on 6 June 2005. Published by Phillips de Pury, 2005. 76 pages, colour illustrated throughout. Front cover reproduces Richard Prince, Untitled (Kool-Aid), 1982/83. Interior includes lots by Robert Gober, Félix González-Torres, Mike Kelley, Paul McCarthy, Richard Prince, Ugo Rondinone, Frank Stella, Christopher Wool, and others.

Prince’s Kool-Aid image belongs to the early rephotographic work that moved advertising, product graphics, and commercial desire into the space of conceptual photography. Prince has described removing brand information from images of consumer goods during this 1982–84 period; by 2005, that same logic had returned as the face of an auction catalogue.

The catalogue was first produced as a market instrument: a guide to lots, estimates, images, and provenance. In this form, it no longer simply documents a sale. It records the passage of images through auction, ownership, discount circulation, cutting, retention, and renewed placement. Its meaning changes through placement, retention, and renewed circulation.

No verified source was found crediting Meyer Vaisman as collaborator on the Kool-Aid cover image. A separate auction index records a Richard Prince and Meyer Vaisman Untitled with the same 6 June 2005 sale date, but available records for Untitled (Kool-Aid) identify the work as Prince.

Condition: Handled auction-catalogue condition with cover scuffing, edge wear, rubbed spine, small surface losses, internal toning, and visible page cuts. Retained Strand price sticker dated 12/08. The cuts, wear, and second-hand price label remain part of the work’s record: auction object, remaindered book, retained studio material, reclassified edition.
