Published in 1984, ZG operated between art magazine, critical journal, image-bank, and alternative exhibition space. Under Rosetta Brooks’s editorship, it brought together artists, writers, musicians, and theorists working across post-punk culture, media critique, conceptual art, and politics. This issue, themed Religion, places belief, image culture, power, media, and spectacle into direct contact, with Reagan-era broadcast imagery on the cover and Michael Smith’s nuclear comic scenario on the back.

Within The New Rare register, this is a strong period object: a large printed support for the circulation of 1980s art and theory. Not a catalogue and not simply a magazine, but a temporary exhibition space in paper form. Its scale, contributors, and survival make it a useful document of how art, media, and politics moved through print before digital circulation.
