Roni Horn began the ongoing To Place series in 1990, using the sequence of books to examine Iceland through photographs, drawings, texts, geography and repeated returns. Across her practice, the book has remained a primary form rather than a secondary record of work made elsewhere.
Published in 2004, Catalogs, Artist’s Books and Monographs gathers Horn’s printed output into a small bibliographic volume. Catalogues, monographs and artist’s books are listed together without establishing a hierarchy between exhibition documentation and works conceived directly for the page. Issued in an edition of 2,000, the publication was jointly produced by Edizioni Periferia and a+mbookstore Edizioni.
The book therefore enters the body of work it records: a publication devoted to locating other publications, small enough to be carried alongside them. Its reflective gold cover replaces the image of a single artwork with a surface that changes according to handling, light and wear.
