Artist’s book, first edition, Fulton Ryder, New York, 2025. Illustrated hardcover; 96 pages; 24 × 30 cm; colour and black-and-white reproductions.
Condition: unopened in its original publisher’s shrinkwrap. Light rubbing, surface marking and pressure creasing to the plastic, particularly around the corners and edges. Original commercial stock label retained on the rear wrapping. The book appears well preserved beneath but has not been opened for inspection. From a collection of artist publications retained in their original shrinkwrapped packaging.
The book gathers works from Prince’s 1-2-3-4 series, in which found portraits are organised by the number of figures they contain: one person, two people, three people, four. Singers, actors, celebrities and anonymous subjects become solo, duo, trio and quartet. The title also recalls the count-in to a garage or punk song, giving the repeated classification a simple visual rhythm.
Prince’s intervention lies in selection, counting and sequence. Existing images are detached from their original settings and returned as a new arrangement: individual, pair, group, repeat.
Still sealed, this copy remains close to its first commercial state. The shrinkwrap and stock label preserve the publication as inventory — visible and available, but withheld from ordinary use.
Securely packed; tracked UK and international shipping available.
