SHIRIN NESHAT — Serpentine Gallery Exhibition Guide, London, 2000

The exhibition arrived at a decisive point in Neshat's career, following the Golden Lion awarded for Turbulent and Rapture at the 1999 Venice Biennale. The guide moves between the Women of Allah photographs and images connected to Rapture: written Persian calligraphy covers faces, hands and exposed skin, while larger crowd scenes divide men and women into opposing social and visual formations. The body becomes a surface upon which religion, poetry, gender and political authority are made visible.

By this period Neshat had begun moving from staged photography into cinematic, dual-screen installations. Works including Turbulent, Rapture and Fervor placed masculine and feminine experience into simultaneous but divided spaces, establishing the visual language for which she became internationally recognised. More than a condensed retrospective, the publication records the moment when Neshat's practice moved from photographic series into film, sound and installation. The restrained design allows the images to function across the fold, turning a modest gallery guide into a portable record of an important London exhibition.
