MONA HATOUM — Twelve Windows, Alexander and Bonin, New York, 2014

The embroidery came first. Hatoum introduced the distance. Twelve Windows was developed with Inaash, whose embroiderers produced twelve panels drawing on regional Palestinian embroidery traditions. Each panel carries the visual language of a different place. Hatoum does not bring them together into a seamless map. She suspends them apart. Wooden clothes pegs hold the embroideries within a loose architecture of steel cable. Textile, inheritance and domestic labour meet an industrial structure that connects the panels while keeping the spaces between them visible. Pattern becomes place. Distance becomes part of the work.

The invitation repeats that logic in miniature. One embroidered panel sits almost alone against a white gallery wall while taut cables cut diagonally across the photograph and continue beyond the frame. The other eleven are missing. The system is not. The image gives us a fragment and insists on everything outside it.

Turn the card over and the work disappears completely: Mona Hatoum. Twelve Windows. Dates. Opening. Alexander and Bonin. Image on one side. Administrative record on the other.

The timing matters. The following year, Twelve Windows entered Hatoum's major Centre Pompidou survey, moving from the New York gallery into a broader institutional history of her work. This card catches it just before that shift. Region → embroidery → installation → photograph → invitation. The support changes. The fragment keeps travelling.
